Stand Up Paddling (SUP) is the fastest-growing water sport in the world. Waikiki surfers first made stand up paddling popular in the 1960s. They used paddles to navigate waves on their longboards and surf instructors used the height advantage of stand up paddling for monitoring large numbers of students on the water. The sport waned as shorter, lighter fiberglass surf boards were introduced.
World famous big wave surfers such as Laird Hamilton began stand up paddling again in the 1990s as a means of training. Surfers once again followed suit and found that stand up paddling let them catch waves sooner and the paddle helped improve maneuverability. It wasn't long before SUP hit the mainstream again and SUP boards poured into the market.
Stand up paddling is effective for building core muscle groups and you don't have to be particularly fit, athletic or skilled to learn. SUP has become very popular to the masses because the sport has a very low entry learning curve.
